The all-ages event will incorporate activities for the entire family, including storytelling, American Indian dancing, craft demonstrations and hands-on crafts, a stickball presentation and games. Popcorn and Indian tacos also will be available.
Library assistant
Stacy Hensley, festival coordinator, said the festival has something new this year to better involve the local community.
"We are sponsoring an art contest for young adults, which includes students from the
Newcastle Middle School or anyone in that age bracket. They will be presenting a pencil sketch with a Native American theme and the drawings will be on display during the festival. Each participant will receive a medal,” Hensley said.
Newcastle Public Library
Branch Manager Kathie Thomas said that this is the fourth year the library has put on this event, and each year the festival grows bigger and better.
"People are hearing about it all across the state and are calling us wanting to be a part of the fun and the cultural experience,” Thomas said. "And children look forward to the games and crafts each year because they all get to collect a prize and take it home with them.”
The American Indian Festival is sponsored by Newcastle Public Library, the city of Newcastle,
Oklahoma Arts Council, Pioneer Library System,
Joyce Stotler, Newcastle Friends of the Library and Walmart.
