Newcastle softball coach Mike Crossley picked up career win No. 800 Friday in the Racers’ 4-0 win against Chandler, and he remained in awe Monday about the accomplishment.
“I didn’t envision that many wins, but it’s been a fun ride,” he said. “I love it here at Newcastle, this is where I started and this is probably where I’ll finish up.”
Crossley, 52, was named the softball and baseball coach at Newcastle in 1988, even winning The Oklahoman’s Little All-City baseball coach of the year his first season.
But something has eluded Crossley each year — a state championship. The Racers have finished as state runner-up six times in softball while making the state tournament 21 of his 25 seasons.
“We just can’t seem to get that elusive title, but it’s been fun,” Crossley said.
And Friday was certainly one of those fun days.
“The girls didn’t know,” he said. “The girls were excited because we won the game and then my wife came down and told the girls about it. So they were excited and the fans were excited.
“It was a great night. The girls are real proud they got to be a part of it.”
