THE CAR: General Motors is working on an electric car with a 200-mile battery range that will cost around $30,000. Vice President of Global Product Development Doug Parks wouldn't say when or if the car would be built.
THE RACE: Several automakers already sell electric cars for $35,000 or less that go up to 100 miles per charge. Tesla Motors' Model S goes up to 265 miles but starts at $71,000. Parks says GM is racing other automakers to come up with cheaper batteries that could go farther on a single charge.
THE PRIZE: Currently electric vehicles make up only 0.3 percent of U.S. auto sales, but that may rise if companies can give people greater range at a moderate cost.
