News Summary: Google's new Chromebooks hit market

MORE POLISHED CHROMEBOOKS: Google is stepping up its efforts to make a dent in the personal computer industry with the next generation of lightweight laptops powered by an operating system revolving around its popular Chrome Web browser. The machines released Tuesday were built by Samsung Electronics.

THE UPGRADES: The "Series 5 550" laptop is supposed to run two-and-half times faster than the first line of Chromebooks released a year ago and boasts higher-definition video. Google also added several other improvements designed to address shortcomings in the original machines.

THE PRICE: $449 to $549.
