NEW YORK (AP) — SUCCESSION PLAN: Kroger Co. announced Friday that CEO David Dillon will retire on Jan. 1. He we be succeeded in the position on that day by President and Chief Operating Officer W. Rodney McMullen.

THE DETAILS: Dillon will remain chairman of the nation's biggest traditional supermarket operator through Dec. 31, 2014. Kroger said McMullen's successor will be named at a later date.

TENURE: Dillon has served as CEO since 2003. McMullen has served as president and COO since 2008 and as a board member since 2003.
