PROFIT UP: Southwest Airlines third-quarter profit jumped to $259 million from $16 million a year ago. Excluding special items, the company would have earned 34 cents per share, which matched Wall Street's forecast. Revenue rose 5.5 percent to a record $4.55 billion.
SO ARE FARES: The average one-way fare rose 11.3 percent to $159.39. Officials cited longer average trips and an increase in higher-priced Business Select fares.
PUMP SAVINGS: Although fuel prices rose for several years, they were mild in the past year. Southwest paid less per gallon than it did in the third quarter of last year and it consumed 12 million fewer gallons. The result: Savings of $78 million.
