THE NUMBERS: Internet advertising hit a new high in the third quarter, up 18 percent from a year ago to $9.3 billion. Another record is expected in the current quarter, which ends in December.

WHAT'S GOING ON: Marketers are shifting their ad dollars from traditional sources like print and TV to the Web as a growing number of people rely on computers and mobile devices for information.

TV STILL KING: Despite its steady growth, the Internet still lags well behind television as the most popular marketing machine. Through the first half of this year, U.S television advertising revenue approached nearly $35 billion.
