NewsOK camera designed to stay out of reach of elephants

NewsOK staff members installed the camera in November. It's attached to an air vent high above the stalls in the elephant barn — far out of reach of the elephants that live there.

The camera is fixed, so it doesn't zoom or pan. It doesn't have sound at the request of zoo staff, said David Morris, director of video for The Oklahoman and NewsOK.

The camera will remain on 24 hours a day, barring any unforeseen technical problems or emergencies. The video is shown through Livestream at www.NewsOK.com/ElephantNation.

This is the second camera project from The Oklahoman and the Oklahoma City Zoo, Morris said. The Koala Cam was on in 1999.

The elephant cam is the third long-term live camera on NewsOK.com. The other two are the OKC Skyline cam and the tower cam. The OKC Skyline cam shows the construction of the Devon tower. The tower cam is atop the OPUBCO Communications Group building in a partnership with KWTV NEWS 9. It shows the area near Broadway Extension and Britton Road.

NewsOK.com also does live streaming video of various events, such as college football game days, news conferences and studio shows.
