Seeking a journalist

We’re looking to hire a web journalist.

NewsOK.com is filling a position as a web editor. The role is covering the night shift and being responsible for NewsOK, NewsOK Mobile and other digital initiatives for OPUBCO Communications Group. We’re seeking a journalist with strong digital skills and a great amount of responsibility to manage the constant activity on the NewsOK home page while writing, editing and sharing on all our platforms — including social media.

Journalists interested in this opportunity should email their resumes to aherzberger@opubco.com.

The Behenna project

Did you see our Mother’s Day story by Jenni Carlson in Sunday’s newspaper about Vicki Behenna and her battle to free her son from federal prison? I hope you also had a chance to visit the website for the project.

With each digital presentation, we are trying something a little bit different, but the focus is always on telling a story. In this case, newsroom developer Nick Tankersley worked closely with designer Bill Bootz to present the story that was told by Jenni Carlson, illustrated by photojournalist Sarah Phipps, produced for video by Paige Lessley, edited by sports editor Mike Sherman and copy edited by Tom Maupin.

In the end, it was a great collaborative effort of long-form story-telling.

And if the length of the story scares you, just take a moment to watch the video below. Let it start playing while you multitask on your computer. After a few seconds, you’ll click back to the video and watch intently. And after that, you’ll click this link and read the whole story.

Facebook commenting?

We received this piece of feedback this week.

i find it very disturbing that the only way an individual may comment on your articles is through Facebook!!!!!!! Many people, myself included, find facebook to be a dangerous form of communication!!!! Your not allowing people to comment by e-mail is an obvious attempt to limit opinions that differ from the Daily Oklahoman!!!!!!

Our decision to move to Facebook commenting came late last year. I posted about it and explained our reasoning. The feedback has really been pretty positive, even from those who were originally against it.

But I post again because new users are being introduced to the Facebook commenting on NewsOK every week.

I’d also point out that we encourage users who want their opinions to be heard in The Oklahoman to submit a letter to the editor through our online form. The Oklahoman opinion editor J.E. McReynolds is always seeking a wide variety of opinions for those pages — both for The Oklahoman and NewsOK.

Golf picks

It’s also not too late to join the ongoing U Pick’em contest for Golf tournaments on NewsOK.

We’ve had this game for quite a few years now.

But you don’t have to start playing before The Masters. Now is a great time to begin. There are still a few tournaments left before the U.S. Open. Get your favorites determined before you spend all of Father’s Day weekend on the couch watching great golfers post average scores.
