NFL Draft: Tennessee Titans take OSU's Markelle Martin in sixth round

— A quick glance at Markelle Martin’s Twitter timeline Saturday afternoon gave a glimpse into the mind of an NFL prospect watching himself slide in the draft.

“Man, they're drafting fullbacks now.”

“Do they have something against DBs from Okie st.??”

“My guess, got hurt at the worst n wrong time.”

Martin’s name finally popped up on the screen at around 3:40 p.m., as the Tennessee Titans selected the former Oklahoma State safety with the 20th pick of the sixth round (No. 190 overall).

“There are so many people to thank,” Martin said in a release. “I thank the Oklahoma State alumni and community. I especially want to thank Shaun Lewis, Brodrick Brown, Daytawion Lowe and the rest of the OSU defense for trusting in me.

“I also want to thank Terry Henley and Amy Randolph in academics, Coach Mike Gundy, Coach Joe DeForest, Coach Jason Jones and Coach Glenn Spencer for helping me develop into the man that I am and giving me an opportunity to succeed not just in football but also in life.”

Martin was, somewhat surprisingly, the only former Cowboy drafted Saturday. But by Saturday night, eight had already agreed to terms on free agent contracts, Oklahoma State announced.

Receiver Josh Cooper will reunite with quarterback Brandon Weeden by signing with the Cleveland Browns. Defensive end Jamie Blatnick signed with the Denver Broncos, Grant Garner with the Washington Redskins, safety Johnny Thomas with the New Orleans Saints, offensive lineman Levy Adcock with the Dallas Cowboys, Richetti Jones with the Arizona Cardinals, Hubert Anyiam with the San Diego Chargers and James Thomas with the Minnesota Vikings.

Martin, who was projected by many to go as early as the third round, is probably right in his assessment that a knee injury just before the NFL Combine contributed to him falling to the sixth round. He could not work out at the combine or at OSU’s pro day last month, though he did hold his own individual pro day in Stillwater two weeks ago. Titans secondary coach Brett Maxie was at that session.
