NORMAN — After Oklahoma defeated Morgan State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, defensive tackle Gerald McCoy sent a text to buddy Blake Griffin.

"I was like, ‘Blake, seriously, why do people keep trying to take you out? You gotta be saying something,’”joked McCoy, referring to the body slam Griffin received. "But Blake says, "’No, I promise. I didn’t say anything to that dude. He just suflexed me.’”

Many star college athletes, anymore, have one foot out the door the day they arrive on campus. But McCoy is having too much fun in Norman to leave just yet.

McCoy has shown up to a basketball team dressed as Cupid, screamed his lungs out volleyball matches, presided over FCA meetings and intimately followed the runs of the OU men’s and women’s teams in the NCAA Tournament.

For him, the NFL can wait.

"The college atmosphere, there’s so much energy and it’s a lot of fun,” McCoy said. "I love the fans, the whole college game day. I love college, period.”

A love for college isa major reason why the rising fourth-year junior put off the NFL Draft for at least another year, even though he was projected to go in the first round.
