— Nigh University Center at the University of Central Oklahoma has undergone a $450,000 renovation, completed just in time for the fall semester that started Monday.

Rick Vega, director of the center, said the renovations that range from a new coat of paint to state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment were paid for with rental fees collected over the years.

Last year, university-related groups rented the meeting and conference rooms 3,800 times, and groups outside the university used space in the facility 1,042 times.

“We are very pleased to be able to do this,” Vega said of the renovation that started in June 2011. “We want to be competitive with reasonable rates.”

Nigh Center is the only place in Edmond large enough to hold events for large groups.

The Grand Ballroom, with its tall ceiling and chandeliers, can seat up to 800 people for a conference and 500 people for a sit-down meal. Constitution Hall, with stadium seating, holds 510 people.

A joint private and city of Edmond initiative is moving forward to build a full-service hotel and conference center at Interstate 35 and Covell Road that would be in competition with the Nigh Center.
