Anyone who enjoys their outdoor space knows that the best landscaping is meant to be enjoyed as well as admired — it's interactive. That's why no yard or garden is complete until it includes a place to relax and take in the sights, sounds and smells of the great outdoors.

This handsome trellis bench project is a great way to create a do-it-yourself outdoor retreat. The project features a wide, comfortable seat, integral planters and trellises (perfect for flowering vines or climbing roses) and an elegantly curved roof.

The bench calls for mostly straight cuts of standard lumber, and its curves are traced from full-size patterns, making it easy enough for beginners. Construction is simple. First, trace the pieces onto wood, cut out and sand. Next, assemble everything with screws, nails and carriage bolts. To finish, apply a coat of paint (as pictured), clear sealer or stain, for a more rustic look. For a touch of luxury, an outdoor cushion may be added to the seat.

The trellis bench measures about 74 inches tall by 60 inches long by 29 inches deep.
