No. 4 Stanford women easily down Oregon 86-62
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer turned to senior forward Joslyn Tinkle and marveled that she had just won her 400th conference game.
"It's amazing to me that I've really been coaching that long, and in that many games. Before Jos was born." said VanDerveer, in her 27th year at Stanford. "Scary."
No. 400 was an 86-62 victory over Oregon on Friday night at Matthew Knight Arena. Chiney Ogwumike had 22 points and 13 rebounds for fourth-ranked Stanford, which won its fifth straight.
VanDerveer is the only coach in Pac-12 history with that many league victories.
"I think it means I've been here a long time," she joked.
But ever the perfectionist, the Hall of Fame coach was still picking apart her team's performance, even in the seemingly easy win over the Pac-12's last-place Ducks.
"We had some great play in spurts, and other times I was 'Who is that team out there?' she said.
Tinkle added 16 points for the Cardinal (19-2, 7-1), who led by as many as 29 points in their 12th straight victory on the road this season. Stanford, which had just 29 3-pointers in conference play going into the game, had 10 3s against Oregon.
"Before we left, the most important thing was 'Pack your shot.' We definitely knew there was going to be an opportunity to knock down shots on the perimeter," Tinkle said.
Ariel Thomas had 17 points for the overmatched Ducks (3-8, 1-7). Freshman Jillian Alleyne added 13 points and 13 rebounds.
"There were a half-dozen times, and that was probably six too many, that our players didn't get back — and that was the first 10 minutes," Oregon coach Paul Westhead said.
The Cardinal are undefeated since a 67-55 loss to then-No. 7 California on Jan. 13 at Maples Pavilion. Stanford's only other loss came against then-No. 2 Connecticut in late December.
Stanford, the 12-time defending Pac-12 champion, leads the all-time series 46-8, including the last 16 straight. The Ducks haven't defeated Stanford since the 2005 season.
