Operation Homefront, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to providing emergency and financial assistance to military families, held a Back-to-School Brigade event Wednesday, at which backpacks full of school supplies were given to children in military families.

About 500 children received the free backpacks and school supplies at the Reed Center, 5800 Will Rogers Road, said Operation Homefront spokeswoman Carol Herrick.

The supplies were donated by members of the Midwest City community and collected at Dollar Tree stores throughout the city, Herrick said.
