Nonprofit sought answers in abuse at Whispering Pines Nursing Center
Published: February 13, 2009
Whispering Pines Nursing Center has been cited for numerous serious deficiencies from the state Health Department that ultimately caused the center to lose its Medicare and Medicaid funding.
Whispering Pines has been targeted by the nonprofit, patient advocacy group, A Perfect Cause. The agency offered a $2,500 reward for information about the alleged assault of former Whispering Pines resident Carol Crow. The reward generated tips to help the investigation, said Wes Bledsoe, the group’s founder.• Inspectors targeted allegations that an aide forced a patient into a shower with his clothing on, and multiple claims of nursing home residents assaulting one another.
• They found that abuse complaints were not properly investigated and staff lacked training to deal with patients with mental health problems.
• Inspectors found a social worker put patients at risk for contracting AIDS when she failed to provide condoms to a sexually active nursing home resident who is HIV positive.
• The medical director failed to ensure that staff and patients were tested regularly for tuberculosis.
