NORMAN — A woman left a message on my machine recently, but did not leave her name or phone number. She said she was recently retired, had no family here and was looking for things to do with other senior adults in Norman.

Since there are probably a lot of people out there just like her, I thought I'd share some of the opportunities Norman offers its seniors. Whether it's playing poker or learning how to line dance, there's plenty to do here if you happen to be older than 55 years old.

The Norman Senior Center, 329 S Peters Ave., offers daily activities that include dominoes, aerobics, art classes, card games and line dancing. Activities begin at 8 a.m. and continue through lunch, Mondays through Fridays. On the first Monday of each month, birthdays are celebrated at 2 p.m. Special activities and trips are scheduled throughout the year.

Seniors can also find things to do at Full Circle Senior Adult Day Center, 1185 E Main St. The day center strives to delay age-related deterioration and nursing home entry by providing social activities, such as theme parties, art classes and other services for seniors.

In addition to health screenings, therapy and fellowship for seniors, Full Circle offers support for caregivers and family members.

Another way seniors can meet new people is to join the Norman Newcomers Club. The club is not just open to those new to Norman. It's open to anyone experiencing a lifestyle change or looking to make new friends.

Club members can join a number of social interest groups that include bunco, bridge, knitting, money management, book discussion, writing, cooking and more.

There is even a "spur of the moment” group where members can call another group member to suggest an activity like a movie or dinner.

The group is on hiatus for the summer but will begin meeting again in September.

Several area churches also offer activities especially for seniors.
