Masquerade ball set

— The annual Mummy and Son Masquerade Ball sponsored by the city's Parks and Recreation Department is scheduled for Friday at 12th Avenue Recreation Center, 1701 12th Ave. NE. The city will host two dances for mothers and sons, ages 4 to 12: one from 6 to 7 p.m. and the other from 8 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $5 each and may be purchased at the recreation center or the Parks and Recreation Department's main office, 201 W Gray St. For more information, call 292-7275 or go to

Nature center hosts trick or treat event

— The Discovery Cove Nature Center at Lake Thunderbird State Park will host a Trick or Treat the Lake event from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The costume party for ages 12 and younger will include decorated tables with treats, games, prizes, fingerprinting, a fire truck and an ambulance display. The nature center is off State Highway 9 on Clear Bay Boulevard.

Halloween party is planned in Newcastle

— Land Run Music Group will sponsor a charity Halloween party from 7:30 p.m. to midnight Saturday at 3824 32nd St. in Newcastle to benefit the Granville Community Music School. The event will feature special effects, wandering monsters and live music by Land Run. Donations will benefit the music school, which is named after Granville (Grant) Leftwich, founder of Rodeo Opry.
