Curriculum available for review

A parent information night will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Media Center at Whittier Middle School, 2000 W Brooks St., for parents of students in the secondary schools. Materials and videos that will be used in a sex education and HIV/AIDS prevention curriculum will be available for review. For more information, call Jeffrey Peterson at 447-6578.

Police offer self-defense class

The Norman Police Department is offering a free class based on the program “My Body … My Life … empowering women through awareness, education, violence prevention and self-defense techniques” on March 30 at the Norman Regional Hospital education building, 901 N Porter Ave. The class will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. To register, call Jennifer Newell at 366-5267 or email Jennifer.Newell@NormanOK.gov. This is the second time the police department has offered the program. Classes are limited to the first 25 women age 18 or older who register.

Porter Avenue closed for work

Beginning Tuesday, Porter Avenue, from Tecumseh Road, extending 1,500 feet north, will be closed for roadwork. Detour signs will be posted. The road should reopen by March 15. The work is part of an ongoing project to widen Porter Avenue.
