Pony rides, inflatables, free watermelon and a baby crawl contest are among activities that will offered at Norman Day 2012, the city's annual celebration of the Independence Day.

The event begins at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Reaves Park, 2501 Jenkins Ave.

A fireworks display is scheduled to begin around 9:45 p.m. The John Arnold Band will perform at 5 p.m., followed by Banana Seat at 7:30 p.m.

Norman Fire Department officials have reminded residents that setting off fireworks in city limits is illegal.

“Public fireworks displays are the safest and smartest way to enjoy the Fourth of July,” Fire Chief James Fullingim said.

Pyrotechnic devices ranging from sparklers to aerial rockets cause thousands of fires and serious injuries each year, he said.

“Twice the number of fires are reported on the Fourth of July than on any other day of the year in the United States,” Fullingim said. “Two out of five of these fires are caused by fireworks.”
