Seven species are available: bald cypress, trident maple, shumard oak, eastern redbud, loblolly pine, American elm and triumph elm.

The giveaway is sponsored by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department with financial help from the Greater Oklahoma City Tree Bank Foundation and the Houston-based Apache Foundation.

The program is open to residents only, city officials said. To register, go to www.normanok.gov or call 366-5473.

Trees may be picked up Friday on the south side of Reaves Park, 2501 Jenkins Ave. The tree giveaway is one of several sponsored by the city since an ice storm in 2007 destroyed hundreds of trees throughout Norman.

Residents receiving a free tree will be provided a packet of tree planting and watering instructions.
