— A 20-year-old man arrested in the shooting death of Mary Ellyn Benavidez has been jailed several times in past three years and is in the process of getting divorced from his teenage wife, court records show.

Dustin Dale Allen, of Oklahoma City, was arrested Thursday and booked into the Cleveland County jail, police Capt. Tom Easley said.

District Attorney Greg Mashburn said charges will likely be filed next week against Allen, who is being held without bail.

Benavidez, 57, was found shot in the chest inside her home shortly before 4 a.m. Thursday. She died a short time later at Norman Regional Hospital.

Neighbors say the home Benavidez apparently shared with her adult son was known as a “high-traffic” residence. One neighbor said the home, 1210 Stubbeman Avenue, was under surveillance by Norman police.

Allen's connection to Benavidez or her residence isn't known. Norman police will not confirm or deny whether they were watching the house for possible drug activity, which was suggested by several neighbors in the hours after the fatal shooting.

Numerous arrests

Since 2010, Allen has been arrested for numerous, mostly nonviolent felonies.
