— Ben Barrett came into his junior year with one goal for the cross country season.

He wanted a state championship.

Now that the Norman North standout has that title in the bank, he's setting his sights even higher.

Shortly after winning the Class 6A state meet, Barrett, The Oklahoman's Boys All-City Runner of the Year, competed in the South Regional for the Nike Cross Nationals at The Woodlands, Texas. His time of 15:37 earned a fourth-place finish to qualify him for the national event next month in Portland, Ore.

“My first goal all year was to win the state championship,” Barrett said. “Everything else after that was just gravy on top. But I was really, really happy to qualify for the national meet.

“The regional last weekend in Texas was really muddy and rainy, so that was good preparation for Portland, because it's always raining up there.”

Barrett has another national event coming up in North Carolina, where he'll run in the regional qualifier for the Foot Locker Nationals.
