Norman North's David Cornwell, facing a hardship waiver to gain eligibility, will not go to prep school if the waiver is denied, his mother said Thursday.

Debbie Cornwell said if the waiver was denied, David would stay at Norman North and graduate in December before beginning college.

Cornwell played for Jones last year as a junior, throwing for 2,742 yards and 27 touchdowns. He also rushed for 755 yards and six touchdowns.

The action was Cornwell's first at the varsity level. He played a pair of subvarsity seasons in Nebraska before moving to Florida and then Oklahoma due to his father's job.

Cornwell did not play during the 2011 season as he took a mission trip to Africa.

Cornwell needs the waiver due to Oklahoma Secondary School Association rules on time of eligibility. Currently, the 2011 season counts against Cornwell's eligibility.

The quarterback does not need an age waiver. OSSAA rules say a player who turns 19 before Sept. 1 of a season is not eligible. Cornwell turns 19 in October.

The family moved to Norman this week after closing on a house.

Cornwell canceled a junior day visit to Indiana scheduled for the weekend between visits to Alabama last weekend and UCLA next weekend. He's expected to visit the Hoosiers during spring football.

Tennessee coaches visited the school this week, and Tulsa is expected at Norman North on Friday.
