The Norman Police Department is offering a new, free service to alert residents of emergencies via text message or email.

The service, created by Nixle LLC, delivers trustworthy and important public safety information through a partnership with the International Justice and Public Safety Network, police Capt. Tom Easley said.

The network allows police departments and other law enforcement agencies to send immediate alerts and advisories free of charge, Easley said.

Police Chief Keith Humphrey said Nixle is a valuable resource that will allow the department to continue its proactive approach to solving police problems in the city.

To register for the service, go to www.nixle.com or text 888777.
