Norman punter Matt Hockett didn't always picture himself in Cowboy orange

ALL-STATE FOOTBALL — Matt Hockett and his parents have always sided with the Sooners. But The Oklahoman's All-State punter couldn't pass up the opportunity to play at a Big 12 program, and is verbally committed to the Cowboys as a preferred walk-on.

Matt Hockett never imagined himself going to Oklahoma State.

Hockett grew up in Norman and his father, John, is an Assistant Dean at the OU Gaylord College of Journalism.

Naturally, Matt and his parents have always sided with the Sooners. But The Oklahoman's All-State punter couldn't pass up the opportunity to play at a Big 12 program, and is verbally committed to the Cowboys as a preferred walk-on.

For his parents, it's a good thing Norman High and OSU wear orange and black.

“They might just be wearing Norman High stuff to games,” Hockett said. “I don't know if they can put on the OSU gear, but they'll definitely be up there watching.”

Matt's family isn't all crimson and cream, though. Some of his extended relatives root for the Cowboys and even helped push him in that direction.

“It was a bit of a difficult decision,” Hockett said. “I had grown up never even thinking of going to OSU. But half of my family, who lives in the Tulsa area, does like OSU and they were always kind of beating it into my head. When the opportunity came I just couldn't turn it down.”
