Circuit City announced Monday the company will shutter more than 150 stores nationwide, including a new store in Norman and an Oklahoma City store northwest of Penn Square Mall.

The Norman store, in the University North Park shopping center, opened in November 2007.

"It’s a shame we’ve had a downturn in the economy,” said Don Wood, executive director of the Norman Economic Development Coalition. "This is such a new store, it probably didn’t get a chance to get up and running.”

He said Circuit City’s departure is not a reflection on Norman or its market for attracting retailers. A waiting list of retailers interested in North Park should be able to fill the space, he said.

City store to close

Circuit City also will close one of three Oklahoma City stores at 3625 Northwest Expressway. That will leave two stores, at 1409 W Interstate 240 Service Road and near Quail Springs Mall.

The electronics retailer said Monday it will close 155 stores in 55 U.S. markets, abandoning 12 markets and reducing its work force by about 17 percent. Affected stores will be closed today and store closing sales will begin Wednesday.

They talked about a merger with blockbuster, but it fell apart. In a couple of years we are going to have virtually no choice left - one place to buy cars - one phone company - one airline - one bank .........

You'd think they would have done better research before spending money on new stores to just close them up in a year. Poor management big time! Or they'd leave a brand new store and close older under-performing stores.
