NORMAN — Saxophonist David Sanborn heads the list of world-class jazz and blues artists who will perform at the Jazz in June festival June 21-23.
One of the most commercially successful American saxophonists to earn prominence since the 1980s, Sanborn has released 24 albums, won six Grammy Awards and has had eight gold albums and one platinum album.
Other performers set for the three-day event include the high-energy blues band Steve Coleman and the OBS All-Stars, vocalist Carolyn Wonderland and the Bert Dalton Brazil Project, based in Santa Fe, N.M.
Sanborn will perform at 9 p.m. June 23 at Andrews Park, 201 E Daws St., capping three days of free concerts, after-hours jams and jazz clinics.
The festival kicks off at 7 p.m. June 21 with a “Blues Under the Stars” concert at Brookhaven Village, 3700 W Robinson St. A second evening concert begins at 7:15 p.m. June 22, also at Brookhaven Village.
Free jazz clinics featuring many of the headlining musicians will be from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 22 at the Santa Fe Depot, 200 S Jones Ave. Space is limited, so call 325-3110 or email email@example.com to reserve a spot.
Founded in 1984
Founded by the Norman Arts and Humanities Council and the Cimarron Circuit Opera Company in 1984 to bring high quality blues and jazz acts to Norman, the festival draws jazz enthusiasts from across the state and region. Some 50,000 people are expected to attend this year's performances.
