EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Northwestern cornerback Nick VanHoose has left Saturday's game against Vanderbilt because of a lower back injury.

He twisted his lower back as he hit intended receiver Jonathan Krause and broke up the pass on the game's second play from scrimmage. He walked off the field after being tended to for a few minutes.

Northwestern initially said he was questionable to return but ruled him out in the second quarter.
