I've read several articles about who's to blame for the problems at Douglass High School, but I've never read any questions concerning the responsibility of the students. I don't understand how we think these students are just a few months from being sent out into society to get a job, pay bills, raise a family and navigate through college but have no responsibility for staying on track to graduate from high school. I know it's more fun to blame teachers and administrators rather than students and parents, but we've ridden that horse into the ground and gotten nowhere.
We know what the real problem is, but we're not willing to go there. So we're left with only one illogical option: Fire Karl Springer! We know Springer isn't the problem but he's “handy” and it keeps all of us from having to look into the mirror. Besides, we'll have taken some kind of action and we should feel pretty darn good about that. The sooner we fire him the sooner we can get back to feeling good about ourselves!
