Fewer state prep telecasts
Fox Sports Oklahoma (Cox 37) plans to air five OSSAA state championship basketball games from Lloyd Noble Center next weekend, network spokesman Ramon Alvarez said. Classes include 6A boys and girls, 5A boys and girls and 4A boys.

The games at 7 and 8:45 p.m. March 14 will air live, while the other games will be shown on delay at 5 p.m. March 14 and 3 and 10:30 p.m. March 15. Mike Wolfe and Rod Thompson will be the announcers.

Highlights from the finals in other classes will air in "OSSAA Championship Spotlight” shows, halftime of Oklahoma City Thunder telecasts and "Thunder Live” postgame shows.

Alvarez said the network was unable to broadcast more games because of a lack of commercial sponsorship.

Team USA debuts
Led by Derek Jeter and Dustin Pedroia, Team USA will make its debut in the World Baseball Classic against Canada at 1 p.m. Saturday in Toronto on ESPN. Other Saturday telecasts include the Dominican Republic vs. the Netherlands at 10 a.m. on ESPN2 and Panama vs. Puerto Rico at 4 p.m. on ESPN

ESPN and ESPN2 will combine to televise 23 games, and MLB Network will air 16 games.

Short takes
NBC has hired Al Michaels as daytime host of its coverage of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. ... The OU women’s basketball team closes out the regular season at Texas at 2:30 p.m. Sunday on FSOK. ... Former Kansas City Chiefs coach Herm Edwards made his ESPN debut as an NFL studio analyst this week. ... CBS College Sports Network, through a deal with DIRECTV, is now available in more than 30 million homes. ... The Texas Rangers make their spring training debut on Fox Sports Oklahoma at 2 p.m. Saturday against the Chicago White Sox.
