ESPN quiets Smith
Flamboyant commentator Stephen A. Smith, once a rising star who had his own show called "Quite Frankly with Stephen A. Smith,” is leaving ESPN on May 1 when his contract expires.

In a statement, Smith noted it was time to move on. "My desire to venture beyond sports into the world of news, politics and entertainment has grown,” he said.

An ESPN spokesman said, "We decided to move in different directions.”

Sooners featured
Fox Sports Oklahoma (Cox 37) will feature OU at 10 p.m. Sunday as part of its "Big 12 Spring Football” series. The 30-minute show will include spring game highlights, reports on the offensive line and wide receivers, and interviews with coaches and players.

OSU will be featured at 10 p.m. May 11.

Short takes
A new version of the old classic "The Superstars” will debut at 7 p.m. June 23 on ABC. Eight celebrities will be paired with professional athletes in various sports events, and one team will be eliminated each week. ... Fox Sports Oklahoma will air the OU-Baylor baseball game at 1 p.m. Saturday ... TBS has hired former pitcher David Wells as a game analyst. He will make his debut with the Boston-Tampa Bay telecast at noon May 3 ... TNT analyst Charles Barkley is being featured on NBA.com with The Barkley Zone, a new video channel for the playoffs. ... HBO is producing a portrait of Boston Red Sox slugger Ted Williams, which will air in July.
