Nova's 'smashing thru' in 1979 issue

by Matthew Price Published: May 9, 2013

This final issue of the 1970s “Nova” series was one I bought in a package with about 20 other issues from the series when I was living in Dallas and interning at the Dallas Morning News.  I bought it from a dealer who had a weekend shop with all sorts of odds and ends and wonders stacked in no particular order.   I’d liked Richard Ryder before, based on following his character in “New Warriors,” but I gained a new appreciation for the character’s early days when reading nearly the entire run.  It’s fun, Marvel style heroics with a space flair.  It doesn’t surprise me that the series was brought back for a well-reviewed run in the late 2000s and a new Marvel NOW! series (with a different lead character).  There’s a lot to like in this mythos, even if some of the 1970s issues now come off as dated.

However, if you’re assuming the last issue of Nova’s series would end Nova’s story, not so much.  The story continues in “Fantastic Four” #204-214, with an epilogue in #217; Nova’s story finally concludes (for a while) in Rom #24, before Richard Ryder returns nearly a decade later in New Warriors.
