NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Entergy Corp. says it shut down one of its three nuclear power plants because of the approach of Hurricane Isaac, but two others remain in operation.

The New Orleans-based power company says the Waterford 3 plant in Killona, La., will be powered-up after the storm passes. The plant is about 20 miles west of New Orleans in St. Charles Parish.

Entergy says the River Bend plant, about 25 miles northwest of Baton Rouge, La., and Grand Gulf, near Port Gibson, Miss., remain at full power.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says extra inspectors were sent to all three plants and will remain there until the storm is no longer a threat.

Entergy says Waterford 3 is designed to withstand winds of 200 mph and will provide safe shelter for about 100 essential employees who are there.
