ATLANTA (AP) — The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has chosen a new resident inspector for a plant in southeast Georgia.

NRC spokesman Roger Hannah said in a statement Monday that NRC officials in Atlanta chose former project engineer Dustin Retterer for the position at Plant Hatch, which is operated by Southern Co. near Baxley.

NRC officials say resident inspectors evaluate nuclear plants and major projects, interact with workers and the public. A congressional study in 2013 showed that Plant Hatch was one of two nuclear plants in Georgia to be issued safety violations between 2000 and 2012.

NRC officials say at least two NRC inspectors are assigned to each U.S. commercial nuclear plant. Officials say Retterer, a University of Tennessee alum and U.S. Navy veteran, will join Senior Resident Inspector Dave Hardage.
