BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — A $1.5 million donation from Major League Baseball's official cap-maker has helped a Buffalo cancer hospital reach a fund-raising goal for a major expansion project.

Roswell Park Cancer Institute plans an 11-story Clinical Sciences Center on its Buffalo campus that will include a bigger chemotherapy clinic, breast care center and a patient education center. The gift from Buffalo-based New Era Cap Co. announced Thursday closed out a $40 million round of fund-raising. Construction is scheduled to begin next spring.

Roswell Park says it's seen a 40 percent increase in patients over the past five years, and a nearly 60 percent rise in outpatient appointments over the last decade.

New Era Chief Executive Christopher Koch says his father, David, who also headed New Era, died of cancer in 2002.
