NY Military Museum gets Benedict Arnold painting
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — A massive historical painting depicting Benedict Arnold leading American soldiers to victory at the Battle of Saratoga has been donated to the New York State Military Museum.
Officials at the Saratoga Springs museum say the 7-foot-by-25-foot mural was donated by the H. Lee White Marine Museum in Oswego. Officials there say the artwork didn't fit in with the Marine Museum's mission of telling the history of Lake Ontario.
The painting, entitled "Benedict Arnold, Triumphant at Saratoga" was created in the 1930s by George Gray, an artist known for his military and historic paintings.
It hung for years in a hotel in Troy, along with Gray's painting depicting New York soldiers fighting in World War I.
Arnold famously betrayed the American side during the Revolution and defected to England.
