NEW YORK (AP) — After strong criticism, New York City's Museum of Modern Art says it's reconsidering its decision to raze a nearby building for its expansion.

The museum said Thursday it has hired the architecture firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro for the expansion and to determine whether to incorporate the former American Folk Art Museum into the design.

The firm said in a statement that it asked MoMA to allow it time to explore a range of possibilities, including integrating the former folk art building into the expansion plan.

MoMA purchased the building after the folk museum defaulted on nearly $30 million in bond debt. The six-story folk art building had won accolades when it opened in 2001.
