NEW YORK (AP) — New York City police are testing a technology that reads body energy to find out whether someone is concealing a weapon.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Wednesday that the tests are preliminary. Officers aren't getting the device any time soon.
The technology relies on something called terahertz (TEHR'-uh-hurtz) radiation, which can penetrate clothing and highlight objects beneath it.
The device resembles body scanners used at airports. Kelly says they're working to make it portable.
Kelly says he's not sure how long it will take to develop the technology.
The aim is to get guns off the streets.
