Obama calls new election law a milestone for Iraq
Published: November 8, 2009
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is calling the Iraqi parliament's passage of a much-delayed election law an a milestone as the Iraqi people take charge of their future.
The president said in a Rose Garden statement Sunday that the new election law will facilitate national elections in January as planned and will not impede the departure of all U.S. combat forces by next September.
Obama says the vote by parliament on the election law is another reminder that the violent enemies of progress in Iraq will fail.
The president says the U.S. will continue working closely with the Iraqi people and their government as Washington begins drawing down its troops next spring.
