WASHINGTON — As the prospect of double-digit unemployment looms, President Barack Obama on Monday sought to set expectations for the nation, saying job losses will likely roll on "for weeks and months to come” because hiring always lags behind in an economic rebound.

"We just are not where we need to be yet,” the president said as he met with a panel of economic advisers. "We’ve got a long way to go.”

Unemployment hit a 26-year high of 9.8 percent in September. The next monthly reports come out Friday and could show it topping 10 percent.

Still, the economy is growing again. Reports out Monday show improvement in manufacturing, construction and contracts to buy homes.

Obama spoke as he met with his Economic Recovery Advisory Board. The session was open to reporters and streamed live from whitehouse.gov.

Green shoots! Green Shoots!!! GREEEN SHOOOTS!!!! "Reports out Monday show improvement in manufacturing, construction and contracts to buy homes." A lesser loss is not an "improvement" in as much as half-dead is not dead.

Only a dummy would assert that the Reagan tax cuts didn't work.

Coincidentally, I was taught the same thing in a public university Macroeconomics class. Mainly, that the economic pie is not static, if people keep more of their money, they become more productive. More productivity leads to higher incomes, which in turn leads to higher tax revenues. Duh.

and from the same report. "The criticism that the tax payments of the rich would fall under ERTA was based on a static conception of human behavior. As a 1982 JEC study pointed out,[1] similar across-the-board tax cuts had been implemented in the 1920s as the Mellon tax cuts, and in the 1960s as the Kennedy tax cuts. In both cases the reduction of high marginal tax rates actually increased tax payments by "the rich," also increasing their share of total individual income taxes paid. Unfortunately, estimates of ERTA by the Democrat-controlled CBO continued to show falling tax payment by upper income taxpayers, even after actual IRS data had become available showing a surge of income tax payments by affluent taxpayers."

As for blaming Bush, I don't see the correlation. The economic downfall was admittedly caused by the housing crisis etc. No evidence exists to show that tax cuts cause the economic downturn. Multiple examples exist to show that raising taxes does in fact slow economic growth and conversely that cutting taxes stimulates economic growth.

good post Brock. As for TeddyR's musings, fecal matter comes to mind. From a Joint Economic Committee report in 1996. "The economic benefits of ERTA were summarized by President Clinton's Council of Economic Advisers in 1994: "It is undeniable that the sharp reduction in taxes in the early 1980s was a strong impetus to economic growth." " The ERTA of course was the Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981 aka the Reagan tax cuts.

of course he's gonna blame bush. and for the rest of his one term that's what obama mama will do. he ain't man enough to take responsibility for anything.

Blame Bush? Of course he will. That's all he's got to help him overthrow as much of the private sector as possible. He can blame Bush as he forces our servicemen and women to face a higher degree of threats in Afghanistan without sending help. He can blame Bush as he squelches free speech like Hugo Chavez does. He can blame Bush as he squashes liberty by forcing Americans into a government run bureaucratic healthcare nightmare. He can blame Bush as he dictates a persons wages in a supposed free society. He can blame Bush as he goes on expensive vacations and hosts lavish partys while you lose your job. He can blame Bush as he raises your taxes through Cap and Trade through a phony science. He can blame Bush as he raises your taxes through government run health care. He can blame Bush as he rations health care. He can blame Bush for his racist comments and being the most polarizing president in our history. He can blame Bush for the hyped up H1N1. He can blame Bush for Africas runaway drug and Aids problem. He can blame Bush for Chicago not being considered for the Olympics. He can blame Bush for California's shortfall of funds even though they spend it on illegal aliens. He can blame Bush for Iran's current runaway nuke mission. He can blame Bush for Hugo Chavez's tyranny over the masses. He can blame Bush for the NYT's, LAT's, Atlanta Journal and Constitution, Time Magazine, and hundreds of other liberal newspapers for going broke. He can blame Bush for GM's and Chryslers woes even though they pay the average uneducated stiff $74 per hour. He can blame Bush for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for giving loans to people that had no way to pay it back. He can blame Bush for people that choose not to get an education. He can blame Bush for CNN being relegated to last place. He can blame Bush for the levys that broke even though the people in New Orleans pilfered and stole the money for those levys. He can blame Bush for our next terrorist hit. He can blame Bush for illegal aliens taking the place of American kids in school. He can blame Bush for our lack of energy, even though Russia, China, Cuba, Mexico, and Venezuala can drill in the abundant resource just off our shore. He can blame Bush for anything he wishes, and the liberal/socialist/apologists will follow like the sheep they are.

Regan reached 11% 3 years after taking office yet, it was OK to blame Carter?!?!?!

Willis-
Its a 1.2 trillion deficit, not 12 and when Bush took office, it was a surplus of $400 billion.

Look folks, the recession started 1 year ago and Oklahoma is just now feeling the effects of it. Hopefully that gives you an idea of how slowly these things move. So yes, you rightfully blame Bush for this mess.

Fux News did a poll and 58% of Americans blame Bush/republicans for this deficit and recession. Obama wasn't the one who borrowed a trillion dollars from China to invade Iraq. Obama wasn't the one who passed an unfunded $500 billion dollar prescription drug benefit program for medicare. Obama didn't slash taxes for the wealthiest Americans, Bush did. When will you learn, tax cuts is government spending?!?!?!

TeddyR, Oklahoma City - Nov 3, 2009 at 11:42 am
10% unemployment. Do you think he'll still be blaming Bush?
