Obituary: Humble and gracious, Tulsan Billie Letts unchanged by later-in-life literary fame

Leading up to the premiere, where she would at last get to see her beloved characters come to life on screen, Billie Letts quietly worried about what Hollywood had done to them. But her fears were soon allayed.

After seeing the movie with an audience for the first time, the Tulsa native was satisfied and even surprised, she told the Tulsa World later.

Not only had Novalee Nation and the other characters from Letts’ novel “Where the Heart Is” survived the transition to film, they had been treated with the respect she felt they deserved.
