Whitlock, 46, is a fifth-generation Oklahoman with 23 years experience in higher education.

He has served as a working pastor since 1993 and published several works on integrating Christian life in business.

His first day on the job will be Nov. 3. Whitlock said he will spend his initial days at the university getting acquainted with the campus, faculty and students.

He said his priorities include growing OBU’s enrollment and decreasing its debt load. Overall, he wants to continue OBU’s tradition of quality education while staying true to its mission of being a Christ-centered institution, he said.

Whitlock succeeds Mark A. Brister, who served as president from 1998 until his retirement in 2007. The position has been held on an interim basis by John W. Parrish.
