Office supply company OfficeMax will lay off about 125 workers at its Norman customer service call center after completing a merger with rival Office Depot Inc.

OfficeMax will permanently close the call center, at 2601 Technology Way in Norman on June 27, according with a mass layoff notice filed this week with the Oklahoma Department of Commerce.

The notice was filed in compliance with a federal law that requires some large employers to give workers advanced notice of mass layoffs.

“We are streamlining the areas where both companies had duplicate operations,” Karen Denning, a spokeswoman for Office Depot said in an email.

Operations from the Norman call center will be transferred to another office in Austin, Texas.

Workers in Norman who will lose their jobs have the option to apply for positions at other Office Depot locations, including the Austin office, Denning said.

“For those who will leave the company, we are committed to helping them with their transition by providing outplacement services and severance,” Denning said.

OfficeMax merged with its larger rival Office Depot in November, creating a $17 billion business with about 2,200 stores worldwide.

In a Feb. 28 earnings call, Office Depot’s chairman and chief executive officer Roland Smith said the newly merged company has reduced “total corporate headcount by over 35 percent.”

“As importantly, our new structure facilitates better decision-making, enhanced accountability and better communication,” Smith said.
