Officials: Storm in Binghamton area not a tornado

Meteorologists say downburst winds of up to 85 mph on Sunday evening hit the rural town of Sidney, about 30 miles northeast of Binghamton. The weather service says that although still and video images from Sunday show a lowering storm cloud that rotates, damage on the ground was consistent with straight winds.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage after the storm.

Storms left thousands without power in the Hudson Valley Sunday night, but only scattered customers were still without power Monday morning.

The violent weather comes less than two weeks after a tornado ripped through the Southern Tier city of Elmira.
