Amath M’Baye started off Tuesday night in Fayetteville with a dunk.
With less than two minutes off the game clock, M’Baye followed it up with another jam. That one got talked about on the broadcast and in highlight packages.
ROMERO OSBY’S NON-START
Last night was the first time Osby didn’t start in his 39-game Oklahoma career.
Kruger’s been saying since the start of practice that guys will earn their spots. Osby lost his starting spot because of the technical called on him that fouled him out of the Northwestern State game.
Senior and former starter Andrew Fitzgerald got the start instead. It was Osby who finished the game with the most points, 22. Fitgerald finished with four which takes us to …
THE DISAPPEARING ACT OF ANDREW FITZGERALD
Earlier this week when I was doing interviews about the three freshman who refer to themselves as “Three the Har’ Way,” I asked what it was like for them to know they took spots that were ones of returning starters.
Their answers were that yes it was tough but they just worked hard for the spot.
And Tuesday night showed why two freshman stole the starting lineup along with junior transfer M’Baye.
Let’s start off with this: The freshmen played horrible. They were absent. None of them created a spark. Je’lon Hornbeak had the most turnovers. However, this is still early in their freshman season. Like Lon Kruger continually says, they have a lot more learning to do.
That being said: Andrew Fitzgerald was absent. He may have been on the court but he was just another body. His stat line was this: four points, one rebound, one turnover, one steal.
But Hornbeak had more turnovers? Yup. And Fitzgerald, a former starter and the guy who got the start Tuesday night was nowhere to be seen as an impact for his team. He didn’t show up like a senior who played a bad game. He just didn’t show up at all. If you look at Sam Grooms stat line, another senior and another former starter, he only had five points, two assists, one rebound and one turnover. Not a great stat line but when watching the game, at least Grooms was vocal and there.
Tuesday night answered a lot of questions and made a lot of statements too.
