OKC @ 125: Outlaws kill a lawman

Oklahoma City is marking its 125th anniversary with 125 facts about the city’s history.

As the city began to grow, the Fire Department was created. Two years later, after a jail break, outlaws killed a lawman.

• The Oklahoma City Fire Department is created in 1893 with a call for election of a fire chief.

• Oklahoma City builds its first permanent public school buildings in 1894: Emerson, 715 N Walker Ave., and Washington, 315 S Walker Ave.

• Police Chief Milton Jones is shot and killed in 1895 by outlaws after a jail break.

• On May 12, 1896, three tornadoes rip through the young Oklahoma City.
