Oklahoma City Thunder assistant coach Maurice Cheeks has accepted the head coaching job with the Detroit Pistons.

Cheeks had spent the past four seasons with the Thunder.

This will be Cheeks' third head coaching job after previous stints as the lead man in Philadelphia and Portland. He compiled a 284-286 record with the Sixers and Blazers. Cheeks will now replace Lawrence Frank, who went 54-94 in two seasons with the Pistons.

ESPN.com first reported the hiring.

Cheeks served as the lead assistant on Scott Brooks' staff. He was considered to be a critical component on the bench because of his previous head coaching experience, as well as his ability to mentor All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook.

“Maurice has been an integral part of the development of our basketball team over the past four seasons,” Brooks said. “His experience as a player and as a coach has been a tremendous resource for me and our players. He is a first class person and we wish him only the best.”

Brooks will have the option to replace Cheeks, but it's unclear which direction Brooks might move.

The Thunder still has assistant coaches Brian Keefe, Mark Bryant, Rex Kalamian and Maz Trakh.
