The captain on Yale's NCAA national title team, Andrew Miller scored his first professional goal in the second period of the Oklahoma City Barons' 2-1 win over the Texas Stars Tuesday night at the Cox Convention Center. After posting three assists in a win Sunday at Iowa, Miller is starting to heat up.
“I'm just playing my game,” Miller said. “I expect to play well every game. I'm hard on myself. I'm happy with the first four games, but I've had some tough shifts. I want to improve in that aspect but it was good to get a win.”
The Edmonton Oilers, the Barons' NHL parent club, have recalled veteran 29-year-old forward Ryan Jones and reassigned defenseman Philip Larsen to Oklahoma City. Over the weekend the Oilers also returned defenseman Brandon Davidson to OKC.
Davidson was with the Oilers about a week as injury insurance. Davidson still hasn't made his official NHL debut. Denis Grebeshkov, a 30-year-old defenseman who has scored 84 points in 227 career NHL games, is playing with the Barons on a four-game “conditioning loan.”
COULD BACHMAN BE NEXT?
There are reports Barons goaltender Richard Bachman might join Edmonton in the near future. Off to a 1-5-1 start, Edmonton owns the worst save percentage (.833) in the NHL.
The Dallas Stars' backup goalie the past two years, Bachman has compiled a .927 save percentage and 2.02 goals-against average in four starts with the Barons.
“Richard was great tonight,” said Barons coach Todd Nelson. “The glove save he made in the second period was tremendous. He gives us a chance to win every night. ... I'm sure he's making people think.”
The Oilers hope No. 1 goaltender Devan Dubnyk (5.43 GAA, .829 save percentage) will end an early season slump. If Bachman is promoted. the Oilers might keep three goalies for a brief time, including 33-year-old Jason LaBarbera (3.22 GAA, .871 save percentage) who signed a $1 million deal.
Center Mark Arcobello, the Barons all-time leading scorer, is taking advantage of his opportunity with Edmonton. Arcobello recorded his sixth assist in the Oilers' 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Through seven games, Arcobello is tied for the Oilers' team scoring lead (six points) with Taylor Hall and David Perron. ... The Barons have signed center Joel Broda to a PTO (professional tryout offer). Broda, 23, who played last season with the Houston Aeros, opened the season with Bakersfield, Edmonton's Double-A affiliate in the ECHL. ... The Barons still haven't selected a captain. The assistant captains Tuesday night were Anthon Lander, Derek Nesbitt and Ben Eager.
