Like players who get promoted to the National Hockey League, Oklahoma City Barons general manager Bill Scott said his dream came true on Monday when the Edmonton Oilers named Scott their assistant general manager.

“It’s a dream I’ve been working for and came a lot quicker than I would have ever expected,” Scott said. “I guess it’s right place, right time. It’s a comforting feeling that there are people that believe in me.

“To work for an organization with the history like the Oilers, an organization with a bright future, is perfect.”

Scott, 33, has served as the Barons’ GM all four seasons of the team’s existence. All four years Oklahoma City has made the playoffs. The Unionville, Ont., native was the AHL’s director of hockey operations for four years prior to moving into team management in Edmonton’s organization.

He will serve as the Oilers’ salary cap expert, help with contract negotiations and scheduling and also represent the Oilers on collective bargaining agreement issues, a job previously held by Ricky Olczyk.

“We already talk on almost a daily basis, but having been here in Oklahoma City I can give them firsthand knowledge of prospects we have coming,” Scott said. “All the things I learned while working with the Barons will be very helpful.”
